The Crocker House an Opulent Hotel
In 1873, an opulent hotel was built in New London, Connecticut. It had a grand ballroom and gorgeous suites that hosted prominent guests like US Presidents, Charles Dickens, and Eugene O’Neill. Today, the historic Crocker House is on the New London Heritage Trail and it is a fantastic apartment building complete with its original Victorian architecture and a landscaped courtyard. Echoing history and in the heart of downtown, the Crocker House is a special place to call my home.
The Crocker House features several unique floor plans ranging from a studio to a two-bedroom. Apartments offer gourmet kitchens with pantry closets, scenic views of the water and downtown, and renovated interiors. Select apartments offer hardwood flooring, a decorative fireplace, and vaulted ceilings. The Crocker house features four residential floors with just 80 apartments available.
The hotel was named for Henry Scudder Crocker, its first proprietor, who was also the manager of the elite Pequot House summer resort.
The Crocker House was a five-story luxury hotel built at 180 State Street in New London in 1872. The project was inspired by A. N. Ramsdell, president of the New London Railroad and the New London City Bank. The hotel was named for Henry Scudder Crocker, its first proprietor, who was also the manager of the elite Pequot House summer resort. The Crocker House‘s Mansard-roofed top floor was later destroyed in a fire. An addition to the building, designed by architect James Sweeney, was erected in 1914. Today the former hotel is the Crocker House Apartments.
The Crocker House was a favorite location for social events and political meetings. Charles Dickens, actors Joseph Jefferson and George M. Cohan, prizefighter John L. Sullivan, and Australian prima donna Nellie Melba, were among the hotel’s most celebrated guests. The bar at the Crocker House was James O’Neill’s favorite drinking establishment, a place to enjoy the companionship of his admirers and Irish compatriots. Along with the Irish taverns run by the McGarrys and the Neagles, the Crocker House bar was also frequented by Jamie and Eugene O’Neill and their friends.
Located on the southeast corner of Union Street and Captain's Walk (now State St.) is the Crocker House, a massive five-story, red brick structure. It was built as a hotel in 1873, and was operated as a hotel until the 1960's. The cast-iron columns and lintels of those of its store fronts that remain unaltered and the granite lintels and sills of its upper windows are notable features.
